Do you have dry or damaged hair, but don’t want to stop coloring it?
I meet many customers who have damaged hair from previous colour services. Often the first thing they say is ‘My hair is really dry’. Of course on the surface, this is exactly what their hair feels like, but it’s important to delve a little deeper into what has caused the hair to be damaged, and what can be done to help make it beautiful again.
First, let's start by getting to know your hair...
At a cellular level, your hair is comprised of 3 individual layers;
The Medulla gives your hair it’s strength
The Cortex affects the manageability of your hair
The Cuticle is the outer layer, which contributes to the softness & shine
How did the damage occur?
If a low quality colour product, or chemicals that are too strong for your hair have been used, the hair shaft may be robbed of essential nutrients & integrity through each of these 3 layers, which can result in a really scary feeling of dry, weakened, or even breaking hair. This feeling of damage can also be caused slowly over a longer term by repeated colour services on your hair.
While there are many home based remedies listed online to treat this issue, often they will only layer the surface of your hair providing a cosmetic feeling of softness, and only last for as long as the remedy has been applied (i.e until you wash your hair again). Using these remedies can sometimes actually make the damage worse, as the hair shaft remains weak, and lacks the essential nutrients needed to re-strengthen it after damage has occurred.
So what can you do about it?
In order to effectively restore the integrity of your hair you need to consult your professional hairdresser. The good news is that there is technology available to remedy this issue, so you won’t necessarily have to give up on colouring your hair.
In order to re-strengthen highly damaged hair from breaking we suggest using SMARTBOND by L'Oreal Professionnel, which is a scientifically tested in-salon only treatment to restore your hair primarily at the Medulla layer, and uses Malic Acid, an organic compound as its primary ingredient. SMARTBOND can also be used as an additive to any future colour service to help prevent further damage from occurring when you colour your hair.
To restore the integrity of the Cortex, we recommend taking advantage of the LÓreal Pro-Fiber system, a range of bespoke in-salon only treatments using Aptyl 100 technology. Pro-Fiber not only restores a beautiful, manageable condition to your hair, but it also comes with a recommended range of home hair care which further prolongs the awesome results achieved in the salon.
For efficient restoration of the Cuticle layer of your hair, we recommend a Kerastase Fusio-Dose ritual. These prescription only treatments come in a wide range of formulations & are specifically individually formulated by your professional hairdresser to cater to your specific hair needs.
By paying attention to, and treating the 3 layers of your hair individually, a professional hairdresser is truly respecting the needs of your hair shaft as a whole.
